OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard / 10.5 Leopard and Novell Edirectory Integration

I've spent a lot of time over the last few weeks piecing together the steps required to set up network authentication, home directories and preference management for OS X Clients on a Novell Netware network running Edirectory and AFP. See the attached documents, and please offer any improvements as necessary. Enjoy! If the download links below are not working, please download all three files here: http://www.nerdnet.com/a/OSX106_Edir.zip

New Arrivals

We just wanted to say to Nicole and Richard Moore "Congratulations!" on the birth on their new baby boy Roman James Moore who was born Sunday June 8th at approximately 8 PM. He weighs 8lb 9oz and is 21 inches long. He lucked out and got his mothers good looks :) Lots of love from all of us :)

This is your captain speaking....

As of this morning, I am now a licensed sport pilot, weight shift class land. After many starts and stops over the last couple of years, I was finally able to complete all my requirements and testing. Because of the weather and because I kept changing aircraft I've had a hard time getting finished.

Ubuntu 7.10 - Almost great.

I'm a huge fan of all things Linux / open-source. I've been a Linux user for over 10 years now, and I have to say I am very impressed at how much it has improved in usability and reliability. I was very excited to try out Ubuntu 7.10 after enjoying the earlier versions so much. I decided to try it on my laptop and on my work PC. I won't go into all the details of installing it, running it, etc. I just wanted to point out a few issues I've noticed using it. Overall, I think its a great distro and its very polished, but its not quite perfect.

Employment is mine, sayeth the Nerd.

Sometimes things just come together at exactly the right time... The company I have worked with for just over 5 just had its US operations bought out by another company. The transfer took place April 15th, and I had no idea if the new company would pick me up. Even if they did, I am tired of so much travel. I had just finished up six weeks in Virginia on March 31st before we headed down to Jeep Safari. Luckily, while I was in Virginia I interviewed over the phone with a company here in Oregon, and when I got home I had two more interviews with them before they decided to make me an offer. I am now officially employed here in Oregon! I am proud to announce that I am now the network engineer for Davis Tool. I started a working there a couple of days ago and so far I am very impressed with them, and their desire to use open source tools and operating systems. My first task is to map and inventory the network and start making improvements and recommend new infrastructure. Time to stretch my nerd muscles!

D-Link DHP-301 Powerline Ethernet Woes

We have a room at one end of our small house that has become somewhat of an office / spare bedroom for us. I use a DGL-4300 wireless access point for our wireless LAN, and for whatever reason running it from that room makes it impossible for wireless clients to connect well from anywhere else in the house. The same seemed to be true when we put the access point in our upstairs bedroom. I finally got things working the best from the downstairs living room (getting the Tivo to talk to it via wireless was another nightmare entirely!) I still needed a good connection from the router to the office upstairs at the other end of the house, so I decided to try out the D-Link DHP-301 kit for powerline Ethernet.
