Steve Ballmer: Do you have an Ipod?

No, I do not. Nor do my children. My children--in many dimensions they're as poorly behaved as many other children, but at least on this dimension I've got my kids brainwashed: You don't use Google, and you don't use an iPod. (quoted from CNNMoney

Rehome.

*.nerdnet.com has been moved to a friends colo server in Texas. This is primarily due to the old server being shut down for a "refitting." Thanks to A. Aerts of RSGmann.com for the assist. We looked into colocating the Netra 240 and determined that it was cheaper to rent a server instead on a year to year basis. IRC is down while I wait for the old server to be refitted and reinstalled. I'll have that back up as soon as I get my shell back.

Its Alive!

I finally got the Sparc box booted up for the first time last night. Its a noisy bastard but its running and I can console into via a terminal cable to another computer (it has no video card in it) Now I have to figure out if its possible to boot a new Solaris 10 install CD set via console and wipe the system and start new. Right now I can't even get into Openboot and do anything, I haven't figured out how to get around it booting the OS on the hard drive... Anyone know? Post a comment if you have any useful info... For the really nerdy, below is the boot output:

Sleeping on piles of money

The vast majority of the American public cringes when they pull up to the pump to refuel their vehicles. It seems like gas prices change on a daily basis, usually inching higher, breaking price records and aggravating those of us who don't sleep on piles of cash. Blame Katrina, blame the war in Iraq, but whoever you blame, be sure you reserve some of your frustration for the oil companies and executives who are now posting RECORD PROFITS during this time of economic crisis.

Argh!@!!

Any Pink Floyd fans here? I'm one, and I'm not very happy. The DVD release of Pulse, which was due to be released by Jan. 31, 2006, has been pushed back until September 18, 2006. I checked a few other places and this appears to be accurate. Good hell people, its been 11 years since Pulse was released on VHS, lets get with the program here....

Jackpot!

Some people win the lottery. Nerds find gold in hardware and software, old and new. Call it the nerd lottery then, and I won. Apparently its good to work in an industry where huge companies spend millions on hardware, only to decide they don't need all of it. Solution? Throw it away! Installers recently built a system on our network that houses 4 Sun Netra 240 servers, and approx. 10-12 Sun storage systems, ie RAID arrays. Well, they supplied the installers with two extra Netra 240's and a couple extra carrier grade 10/100/1000 Ethernet switches. The installers left them behind on our premises after they completed the work. We called them to inquire what they wanted us to do with the extra gear, they told us to basically throw it away. Only two people where I work even know what to do with such hardware, and I'm one of them.
